The Masters Behind The Looms

Preserving a 2,500-year-old tradition in the heart of Pakistan.

More Than Just Weavers

At Carpetery, we do not view our artisans as mere laborers; they are master artists preserving one of the oldest forms of human craftsmanship. Based in our manufacturing hubs in Pakistan, our weaving families have passed down the intricate art of hand-knotting from generation to generation.

A single 8x10 hand-knotted rug requires approximately 1.5 million individual knots. It takes two adult artisans sitting side-by-side at a loom, working meticulously for 6 to 12 months, to finish a single piece. When you purchase a Carpetery rug, you are not just buying a floor covering—you are investing in half a year of human dedication.

The 4-Step Master Process

  • 1. Hand-Spinning the Wool: We begin with premium, long-staple sheep's wool (like Ghazni wool). Rather than using industrial machines, our artisans spin the wool by hand. This preserves the natural lanolin (oil) and creates a slightly uneven texture that absorbs dye beautifully.
  • 2. Botanical Dyeing: We utilize traditional, natural vegetable dyes extracted from madder root (for reds), indigo (for blues), and walnut husks (for browns). The yarn is submerged in boiling copper vats, resulting in deep, colorfast hues that develop a stunning patina over time.
  • 3. The Loom (Hand-Knotting): The dyed yarn is tied knot-by-knot onto a vertical cotton foundation. Our artisans memorize complex geometric and floral patterns, executing them with flawless symmetry without the use of computers or automated tufting guns.
  • 4. The Final Wash & Shearing: Once removed from the loom, the rug is submerged in a river-style wash, scrubbed, and laid in the sun to dry. Finally, the pile is sheared by hand to a perfectly even height, revealing the crisp pattern beneath.
